Biography of Angelika Varum
Singer Anzhelika Varum (real name Maria) was born in Lviv in the family of composer Yuri Varum and theater director Galina Shapovalova. She has a half-brother, Mikhail (1989).
The surname “Varum” (translated from German as “why”) was taken by Angelica’s great-grandfather while escaping from the Nazis; his real surname is Roebuck.
Since childhood, she was fond of music, played the piano and guitar, and in high school she toured neighboring cities with the school theater.
After school, without entering the theater institute, she began working as a backing vocalist in her father’s studio, and briefly played bass guitar in the group “Combination”.
Varum’s singing career began almost by accident: in 1990, her father invited her to record the song “Midnight Cowboy” in the studio, which immediately became a hit.
